THOMAS MONROE
While Tom likes to think of himself as Division Winemaking Company’s wine creator, he really fills the role of “Jack of all trades,” or lack thereof… He likes to talk about wine, especially Pinot Noir, until well after he’s red in the tongue, and hence also acts as DWC’s brand ambassador and primary spreader of the word.
Tom enjoys and strives to make nuanced wines that are driven by vineyard character or terrior, with ripe, but not over ripe fruit, using minimally invasive wine making practices. He intends to produce wines that tend to be mid weight, higher in acidity and lower in alcohol. However, he believes there is no actual “typical” in wine and thinks there is the right wine for every person. To people who ask, he often says “buy and drink what tastes good to you!”
Tom grew up in St. Louis, Missouri and enjoyed his time in the Midwest watching Cardinals baseball games, helping his grandfather on their family farm and working for various restaurateurs and bands in the region. His love of skiing, live music and mountain life brought him to Colorado where he attended the University of Denver for his undergraduate degree. Tom’s understanding high finance eventually landed him in San Francisco working for a large bank. After writing a business plan for an Oregon based winery during business school, Tom, Kate and Cass moved to France to begin their life adventure in wine. After an amazing year long experience, the family moved to Oregon determined to make approachable and balanced wines that are affordable to all that love them.
